US Fiscal Matters Dominate Early Headline Flow

Early headline flow in the Asia-Pac session focused on US fiscal matters where a bipartisan group of senators say they have agreed on a deal for around $1.2tn over eight years.

  • AUD/USD is flat, last down 1 pip at 0.7753. NZD/USD is down 6 pips at 0.7196, NZ May manufacturing PMI came in at 58.6 from a revised 58.3 last time out. Aotearoa extended the suspension of quarantine-free travel corridor with Australia's Victoria by another week.
  • JPY is slightly softer, USD/JPY up 4 pips, BSI Large All Industry survey came in at -4.7 against an expected -5.5. Mainichi reported that Japan wants to lift the Covid-19 state of emergency in most regions, including Tokyo and Osaka, on Jun 20.
  • GBP is softer after reports in the UK Times that UK PM Johnson was considering a four-week delay to reopening plans, originally scheduled for June 21. Offshore yuan is flat.
