US Gas Exports to Mexico to Rise to Record in 2024

Gas exports from the US to Mexico are expected to rise from 5.97bcf/d in 2023 to a record average of 6.09bcf/d in 2024, according to BNEF.

  • Flows will be boosted by the start of the Altamira floating LNG 1 project in Mexico with first LNG targeted for late March 2024. The Altamira project will use US feedgas exported via pipelines through Mexico.
  • The Altamira onshore LNG project is planned with construction expected to begin in April, but completion is not expected until Q1 2026.
  • Mexico feedgas demand could rise to almost 0.6Bcf/d by October 2025 with Energia Costa Azul LNG forecast to start receiving US gas in September 2025.
  • The southern Tula-Villa de Reyes pipeline is set to be operational by H2 2024, according to TC Energy, adding additional gas demand of between 0.25bcf/d and 0.4bcf/d.
