US: Incoming Sen Maj Ldr-Expect 'Aggressive Schedule' To Approve Trump Nominees

US

In his first comments on the Senate Floor since being elected leader of the Senate Republican Conference and as such the next majority leader, minority whip John Thune (R-SD) says "The floor priority for the start of the year will be confirming President Trump's nominees and members should expect an aggressive schedule until those nominees are confirmed."

  • Thune: "I plan to have regular meetings with Speaker Johnson and with the White House to ensure smooth coordination and a strong working relationship between the House, the Senate and the Administration as we work together to implement President Trump's agenda."
  • Thune's actions come January, when the new Congress is convened and he takes over from current majority leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), will prove crucial with regards to the appointments process for President-Elect Donald Trump's cabinet.
  • As we noted earlier (see 'US: Gaetz, Hegseth & Gabbard Picks Could Spur Move To Recess Appointments', 1144GMT), should Thune look to allow Trump to utilise recess appointments there may be little that the Senate can do with regards to blocking some of the more contentious Cabinet nominees.
