US Midwest Gasoline Pump Prices Surge

OIL PRODUCTS

Pump prices are surging in the Midwest region after the shutdown of the US’ largest inland refinery, according to Bloomberg.

  • Retail gasoline in Illinois has risen 28 cents on the month, following the shutting of BP’s Whiting refinery in Indiana following a power loss, according to AAA data.
  • Diesel is also up by 22 cents to around $4/gal.
  • Prices are set to climb higher still as wholesale gasoline premiums in Chicago rallied Feb. 22 a near three-month high.
  • Ample fuel supplies in the region had previously capped the price impact due to Whiting’s outage, but the fall in gasoline inventories during the past two weeks has further constrained supply.
