US Pulls Out Of Major Afghan Airbase As Troop Drawdown Accelerates

The US has pulled its troops out of the Kandahar Airbase in southern Afghanistan, one of the largest military bases in the country with more than 26,000 coalition troops posted there at its peak size.

  • Unnamed Department of Defense officials confirmed to Stars and Stripes that the base had been handed over to Afghan National Defense Security Forces earlier this week.
  • The full US troop drawdown from Afghanistan is due to be completed by 11 September.
