US Purchased 2.8mbbl of Crude for SPR September Delivery

The US DOE purchased 2.8mbbl of crude oil for the strategic petroleum reserve, bringing the total amount of oil that the US has purchased for the reserve since last year to 32.3mbbl, it said on Thursday.

  • The oil will be delivered to the Big Hill storage site between 1-30 September.
  • The Energy Department is also seeking some 3mbbl for a site that had been down for maintenance — the Bayou Choctaw site in Louisiana — starting with 1.5mbbl in August, and an additional 1.5mbbl in September.
  • The SPR currently holds about 363mbbl, according to Energy Department data.
