US Sanctions Hong Kong Chief Carrie Lam, Chinese Officials on Crackdown

US

The Treasury Department announced sanctions imposed on 11 individuals, including Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam, over their role for curtailing political freedom and Hong Kong's autonomy.

  • The sanctions are carried out under an executive order that Trump signed last month.
  • "The United States stands with the people of Hong Kong and we will use our tools and authorities to target those undermining their autonomy," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.
  • The action comes after a Treasury move last week that put sanctions on a government entity and two senior officials who have helped manage it, citing human rights abuses against Uighurs. And on Thursday Trump issued orders banning TikTok and WeChat from operating in 45 days if they are not sold by Chinese parent companies.
