US Sec Of Def: China Meeting Important For Lines Of Communication

Wires carrying comments from US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III regarding his talks with his Chinese counterpart Wei Fenghe in Singapore last week.

  • Austin states that the meeting was 'an important step in the effort to open lines of communication'.
  • Adds that the meeting was a crucial 'opportunity to raise concerns about the potential for instability in the Taiwan Strait'.
  • Earlier today, Chinese Foreign Ministry spox Wang Wenbin stated, when asked on US naval actions in the Strait that “There is no such thing as international waters in international maritime law...Relevant countries claim that the Taiwan Strait is in international waters with the aim to manipulate the Taiwan question and threaten China’s sovereignty.”
  • In a speech on Sunday, Wei stated in a bellicose speech that “If anyone dares to secede Taiwan from China, we will not hesitate to fight...We will fight at all costs. And we will fight to the very end. This is the only choice for China.”
