US Security Advisors Warn Moscow of War Escalation

  • Bloomberg report that US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and senior Russian counterparts have held talks in recent months on guarding against the risk of escalation and warning Moscow against using nuclear weapons, according to a Wall Street Journal report published yesterday night. A settlement of the war in Ukraine wasn’t an aim of the discussions, according to the report.
  • Moreover, the Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraine leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Putin is removed from power in an attempt to ensure Kyiv maintains support from other nations, The Washington Post writes according to people familiar with the discussions.
  • Citing 38 North, Bloomberg report that satellite imagery showed a train from North Korea crossing into Russia on Friday in the first traffic observed on the route in several years. It wasn’t possible to determine the purpose of the train from the imagery, the North Korea-focused website said, adding that North Korea and Russia agreed in September to restart rail traffic.
  • Looking ahead this week, CPI data crosses on Wednesday where inflation is expected to fall from 13.68% to 12.80%. Today, India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar begins his two-day visit to Russia.
