Senate Minority Whip John Thune (R-SD) has told reporters that he expects the Senate will take up a Continuing Resolution to extend government funding for three-months on Thursday.
- The CR, is expected to come in front of the House of Representatives tomorrow where a strong contingent of Democrat reps will vote in favour of the bill to clear the two-thirds majority required to pass the package under suspension of rules.
- Melanie Zanona at Punchbowl News reported earlier that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) held a conference meeting this morning to whip his lawmakers to vote in favour of the package. He reportedly argued a government shutdown is harmful and, "if they don’t act first they’ll get something from the Senate loaded up with extra costly items."
- According to Zanona, "Johnson showed polling about just how unpopular a gov shutdown is with voters," and argued that "they can avoid an avoid omnibus [in December]," referring to the huge budget package that is often rushed through Congress before government funding deadlines.
- There are still procedural issues to overcome to complete the legislation, including defeating any Republican amendments in the Senate, but the process to get a CR in place has been relatively serene with little risk of a shutdown. The more challenging funding fight will resume following the General Election when the makeup of the next Congress has been determined, and the GOP must face re-electing Johnson or selecting a new leader.
