US STOCKS: Early Equities Roundup: Paring Post Data Losses Into Midday
US STOCKS
- Stocks are modestly weaker ahead midday, off morning lows after some brief volatility -- larger than expected weekly claims overshadowing a rise in supercore CPI data. Currently, the Dow is down 40.97 points (-0.1%) at 42471.29, S&P E-Minis down 1.5 points (-0.03%) at 5840, Nasdaq up 27.4 points (0.1%) at 18318.13.
- Energy and Materials sectors led gainers in the first half, a rebound in crude prices (WTI +1.60at 74.84) underpinned oil and gas stocks: Valero +2.02%, APA +1.33%, Devon Energy +1.19%. The Materials sector was supported by a mix of chemical (Mosaic +4.12%, Albemarle +0.87%) and mining stocks (Freeport-McMoRan +1.68%), the latter likely underpinned by a rise in Gold in early trade (+18.04 at 2625.81).
- On the flipside, Real Estate and Consumer Staples sectors underperformed in the first half, health care and retail REITs weighing on the former: Ventas -1.61%, Welltower Inc -1.53%, Regency Centers -1.52%. Retail distributors weighed on the Consumer Staples sector: Costco -1.44%, Kroger -1.25%, Sysco -1.09%.
- Reminder, the latest earning cycle picks up Friday with several banks reporting before the open: Wells Fargo, JP Morgan, Bank of NY Mellon and Blackrock.
