US STOCKS: Moderate Gains Ahead Sep FOMC Minutes

  • Stocks are trading moderately higher at midmorning, the DJIA off the top end of the early range as markets await the release of the September FOMC minutes later this afternoon (1400ET). Currently, the Dow trades up 103.83 points (0.25%) at 42185.29, S&P E-Minis up 9.25 points (0.16%) at 5810.5, Nasdaq up 30.4 points (0.2%) at 18214.84.
  • Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary sectors led gainers in the first half, carry-over support for Super Micro Computer, up 3.75% this morning and nearly 16% on the week after strong graphics processor sales were announced, Corning +3.18%, Palantir +2.22%.
  • Cruise lines led gainers in the Discretionary sector for the second consecutive session: Norwegian +8.32%, Carnival +4.88%, Royal +3.22%.
  • Conversely, Utilities and Communication Services underperformed in the first half, independent power and electricity providers weighed on the Utility sector: Constellation -5.34%, Vistra -3.66%, NRG Energy -2.86%.
  • Meanwhile, interactive media and entertainment weighed on Communication Services: Google -1.69% after headlines reported the US DOJ "told a federal judge it’s considering recommending that Google be forced to sell off parts of its operations" (BBG). Match traded -1.48%, Meta -1.19%.
