US Tightens Entry Rules for Hungarians

  • The US tightened entry rules for Hungarians under its visa-waiver program, citing security concerns about a fast-track plan Prime Minister Orban put in place for people living outside Hungary’s borders, Bloomberg report. The US will limit the number of times Hungarians can enter to once a year, rather than allowing multiple visits, and it will cut the period that electronic authorisations are valid under the ESTA program to one year, instead of two now.
  • The government has decided to maintain current subsidies for maintaining low utility bills during the next "utility year" starting on Aug 1, the government commissioner in charge of the scheme said on Tuesday as per MTI. The commissioner told a press conference that the funds for financing the scheme in 2024 were in place in the central budget.
  • EURHUF starts the session 0.12% in the green, though remains within yesterday’s ranges. There are no major economic releases scheduled for today. Tomorrow, industrial production (Est: -5.3% y/y; Prior: -4.6%) and retail sales data (Est: -9.6% y/y; Prior: -12.3%) are on the docket.
