US To Impose Fresh Sanctions On Cuban Officials

Washington Post and Politico reporting that the Biden administration is set to announce a fresh round of sanctions on senior officials within the Cuban regime.

  • Reports state that sanctions are set to be imposed under the Global Magnitsky Act on officials within the interior ministry and the Cuban military for the crackdown on pro-democracy protests that took place across Cuba earlier in the month.
  • Some on the left of President Biden's Democratic Party have called for an end to the embargo on Cuba, but these calls have been waved away by the administration with these latest sanctions.
  • Politico also reporting that the Biden administration is seeking ways to increase internet access for the island nation, with the regime cutting access to certain websites or even the internet entirely for periods during the protests.
