US: Trump Likely To Appoint Gov Burgum As 'Energy Tsar'

US

The Financial Times reporting that US President-elect Donald Trump is considering tapping North Dakota governor Doug Burgum (R-ND) as ‘energy tsar’ in his second term administration, a position that may oversee an expanded energy portfolio. Burgum governs a key oil drilling state and, similar to Trump, has expressed an ambition to accelerate hydrocarbon production.

  • Burgum, who also ran in the Republican primary and was considered a frontrunner for Trump’s running mate before the selection of Senator JD Vance (R-OH), would be tasked with overseeing an overhaul of environmental regulation and permitting to boost hydrocarbon production – one of Trump’s day one priorities.
  • FT notes: “The new energy tsar role and its powers are not yet finalised, but people familiar with the plans said it would co-ordinate Trump’s deregulatory agenda across a patchwork of agencies including the Department of Energy, Department of Interior, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and Environmental Protection Agency.”
  • Trump’s second Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette is also reportedly under consideration for leading the Department of Energy, according to various media outlets.
  • Brouillette stepped down as head of the Edison Electric Institute lobbying organization last week in order to “spend my time engaging directly with world business and policy leaders" on "existential" energy challenges, according to a statement.
