USDCAD Opens Highs Since Early Jan, C$ REER Still Depressed

  • USDCAD has pushed to new session highs of 1.357 as S&P E-minis extended a 1.2% intraday slide for down -0.3% on the day.
  • Despite the about turn for the pair since the US open, the day’s current 56 pip range is close to the narrowest this month. The pair has poked yesterday’s post FOMC minutes high of 1.3568 but a renewed push higher could open next resistance at 1.3665 (Jan 6 high).
  • From a more fundamental viewpoint, the CAD REER remains at the low end of its historical average compared to most G10 peers, -3% below the 5-year average and -5% below the 10-year average per the table below.
