VP Elect Harris To Resign Senate Seat Today, No Change To 50-50 Split

US

Vice President Elect Kamala Harris is set to resign her seat in the Senate today ahead of her inauguration to office on Wednesday.

  • The process begins with the notification of the governor of her state, California's Gavin Newsom.
  • Newsom has already stated he plans to appoint California's Democratic Secretary of State Alex Padilla to fill Harris' US Senate seat until the next election for the seat in November 2022.
  • With Padilla's appointment, it will mean no change to the 50-50 split in the Senate between Democrats and Republicans, meaning Harris will have the casting ballot on any tied votes.
