Week Ahead: Focus On January Inflation Data, CB Decisions

LATAM
  • Besides central bank meetings in Mexico and Peru on Thursday, highlighted earlier, the focus next week will be on January CPI inflation data for Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Colombia, as well as minutes for the latest CB meetings in Brazil and Colombia.
    • On Monday, the minutes for the recent BanRep meeting (when it cut by 25bp) will be released, with a focus on the debate of the size of cuts going forward.
    • The minutes to the recent BCB meeting will be published on Tuesday, with particular interest on the views of the two new members of the Board.
    • On Wednesday, Chile and Brazil trade data for January are in the docket, while Colombia CPI inflation is expected to moderate to 8.4% y/y in January, from 9.3%, potentially giving BanRep more room to step up the pace of easing ahead.
    • Thursday brings January CPI inflation data for Chile, Mexico and Brazil. While inflation in Chile is expected to decline further to 3.5% y/y, from 3.9%, it may edge up by 20bp to 4.9% in Mexico. Half-month CPI data in Brazil already showed a larger than expected decline of inflation in early January.
    • The week closes with Mexico IP figures for December.
