ENERGY – What to Watch

  • The latest Baker Hughes rig count data is due for release at 18:00GMT. The oil rig count is forecast to fall to match the recent low at 599 and the lowest since September. Drilling has slowed in response to the fall in prices since the middle of 2022. The gas rig count was last week steady at 151 compared to the lowest since May at 150 a couple of weeks ago.
  • The ICE and Nymex commitments of traders reports are due for release after the close today at 18:30BST and 15:30EST. ICE Brent crude managed money net long positions increased to the highest since Oct 2021 on 14 Feb suggesting market focus on optimism for a demand recovery in China and upside supply risks. The CFTC are still catching up with the missing market positioning data from recent weeks following the third-party service provider issue. They are aiming to release the missing CoT reports by mid-March.
