What to Watch: Fed Speakers, Debt Limit

  • Multiple Fed speakers scheduled Tuesday, Cleveland Fed Mester kicks off at 0815ET with her economic outlook at a Global Interdependence Center event hosted by the Central Bank of Ireland in Dublin (text and audience Q&A).
  • Up next: Fed VC Barr congressional testimony on supervision/regulation at 1000ET, followed by NY Fed Williams (1215ET), Chicago Fed Goolsbee (1430ET), Dallas Fed Logan (1515ET) and Atlanta Fed Bostic with Goolsbee (1900ET).
  • Economic data includes Retail sales (0830ET), Industrial Production/Capacity Utilization (0915ET), NAHB Housing Market Index (1000ET).
  • Debt limit: President Biden scheduled to meet with congressional leaders (McCarthy, Schumer, McConnell and Jeffries) at 1500ET to discus the debt limit again. McCarthy threw cold water on a resolution, stating late Monday that "talks are nowhere near" getting to a debt ceiling deal by this weekend.
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned in a letter to congressional leaders late Monday that the US is already paying a price for its failure to raise the federal debt limit. “We have already seen Treasury’s borrowing costs increase substantially for securities maturing in early June,” Yellen said.
