AUSTRALIA: WHAT TO WATCH FOR NEXT WEEK FROM ANZ
ANZ: "CPI Q3 (25 October): This is undoubtedly the key domestic economic release
for the month. The headline figure will be dominated by the impact of the sharp
rises in residential electricity and gas prices that came into effect through
most of the country on 1 July. We estimate that the nationwide increase was 10%
q/q for electricity and 5% q/q for gas in Q3. All up we see the headline CPI
rising 0.8% q/q, 1.9% y/y. The increase in core prices will be more subdued. We
see the average of the core measures rising 0.4% q/q, 1.9% y/y. There appears to
be some residual seasonality in the trimmed mean measure, with a step-down in
the Q3 readings in each of the past three years. As such, a result in line with
our expectation probably overstates the weakness in core inflation.
- RBA speech on uncertainty (26 October): RBA Deputy Governor, Guy Debelle,
speaks on 'Uncertainty' for the Warren Hogan Memorial Lecture."
