White House Backs 6 Jan Comm As House Min. Leader McCarthy Voices Opposition

US

Today the White House announced its support for founding a 9/11-style bipartisan independent commission to investigate the 6 January Capitol riots. However, House minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) - the most senior Republican in the House - announced his opposition to the move.

  • This comes despite the bill looking to create commission being approved by the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee Rep. John Katko (R-NY) after negotiation with committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS).
  • McCarthy announced his opposition to the bill in a letter released earlier today, arguing that the scope of the commission was too narrow in not addressing other acts of political violence aside from the Capitol riots. McCarthy wrote, ""Given the political misdirections that have marred this process, given the now duplicative and potentially counterproductive nature of this effort, and given the Speaker's shortsighted scope that does not examine interrelated forms of political violence in America, I cannot support this legislation,"
  • The House is set to vote tomorrow on approving the bill creating the commission. With full Democrat support it is set to pass, but the vote could expose further cracks in the House GOP caucus. These have already been exposed in May with the vote last week removing Trump critic Rep Liz Cheney (R-WY) as the chair of the House Republican Conference and her replacement by a loyalist to the former president, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY).
