Winter Global LNG Supply Set to Rise 6% Year on Year: BNEF

Global supply of LNG is set to rise 6% this winter from a year earlier, to 220m metric tons according to BNEF. Supply is projected to increase from all markets except Qatar over winter 2023-24.

  • Growth will be driven by a 17% increase in US output amid the return of Freeport LNG earlier this year as well as new projects coming online in the Atlantic and Pacific Basin.
  • Five new projects are aiming to commence operations this winter boosting global liquefaction capacity by 14.9mtpa. Arctic LNG 2 in Russia, Altamira Fast LNG in Mexico, Tangguh Train 3 in Indonesia, the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim FLNG off the coast of Mauritania and Senegal, and Tango FLNG in the Republic of Congo.
  • New projects will contribute around 3m tons of supply, or 24% of the total growth anticipated this winter.
  • Downside risks comes from potential new plants delays, extreme weather events and possible production disruption.
