UK: With Brexit Party announcing that they will not stand in Conservative-held
seats in the election focus turns to the Labour (and other parties') seats that
Nigel Farage's party is contesting.
- The Conservatives will be banking on the prospect that in Labour-held
Leave-voting seats, the Brexit Party does not split the Conservative vote, but
the Labour one.
- Many working class Labour Leavers would not countenance voting for the
historically middle class Conservatives, but could vote for the Brexit Party.
Should the Conservative vote hold up in these areas, BXP drawing off Lab support
could see the Conservatives come through the middle and win the seat.
- Initial press reaction is that Farage's announcement does not matter because
there is little BXP vote in the seats Conservatives already hold, but this seems
to be ignoring potential "Lab voters->BXP = Con win" scenario in a number of
seats.
