UK
UK: With nominations for the opposition Labour Party leadership closing the
candidates are: Sir Keir Starmer (86 MP's nominations), Rebecca Long-Bailey
(33), Lisa Nandy (30), Jess Phillips (23), Emily Thornberry (21)
- For the deputy leadership the candidates are: Angela Rayner (85), Ian Murray
(34), Dawn Butler (28), Rosena Allin Khan (23), Richard Burgon (22).
- The candidates are now required to gain the support of at least 5% of
Constituency Labour Parties (a threshold of 33 CLPs), or at least 3 party
affiliates (trade unions, Fabian Society, Labour LGBT group) that, when
combined, total 5% of affiliates on floor of Labour party conference. If
attempting to win through affiliates, least two must be trade unions.
- This process will last from 15 January to 14 February.
- While the Labour leadership election is not important for UK policy in the
short-to-medium term, given the Conservatives' large majority in the Commons,
the identity of the next leader will play a big part in Labour's future policy
direction and electability.
