Xi And Putin Expected To Meet October 18

CHINA-RUSSIA

Reuters reporting that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping will take place on October 18 during the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing - Putin's first trip outside the former Soviet Union this year.

  • Russia's RIA new agency confirmed today that Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller and Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin will be amongst the Russia delegation although IFX reports that no oil or gas deals are likely to be signed.
  • Reuters notes: "Russia is now China's second largest trade partner outside Asia, second only to the United States, which accounted for half a trillion in trade in the first nine months of this year. Russia accounted for $176 billion and Germany $158 billion."
  • In recent days, Putin has staked out a postion opposed to US support for Israel in its war with Hamas. Observers will be watching for signs that the war may drive a deeper wedge between the West and the bloc or largely developing nations aligned more closely with China and Russia.
  • Politico reports that, "representatives from more than 100 countries are expected to attend the forum in Beijing, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán."
