US-CHINA: Xi Holds Call w/President-Elect Trump-Xinhua

US-CHINA

(MNI) London - Xinhua reporting that Chinese President Xi Jinping has held a phone call with US President-elect Donald Trump. This marks the first call between the two men since Trump's election win in November. Earlier it was confirmed that Xi will not be taking up Trump's invite to the presidential inauguration on 20 Jan, but will send his vice-president Han Zheng as a special representative.

  • There are no details yet regarding the content of the call. The topic of US-China relations and the prospect of Trump imposing significant trade tariffs remains one of the top geopolitical and economic issues at the start of 2025.
  • NYT notes that in his Senate hearing on 16 Jan, Trump's nominee for Treasury secretary Scott Bessant "said tariffs should be imposed on select countries to fix trade imbalances or used as leverage to negotiate favorable trade deals. A new round directed at China seems inevitable. In response, China is zeroing in on American chipmakers."
  • Announcing Han's attendance, a Chinese Foreign Minsitry spox said “We stand ready to work with the new US government to enhance dialogue and communication, properly manage differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, jointly pursue a stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relations and find the right way for the two countries to get along with each other,”
