Xi To Attend APEC Summit, Biden Yet To Decide

China's President Xi Jinping has verbally confirmed his participation in the APEC summit that will take place in Bangkok on November 18-19, the Bangkok Post reports citing Thailand's Foreign Ministry.

  • U.S. President Joe Biden has not yet responded to the invitation. The spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry said they were "still in the process of coordinating" with the White House, when asked about media reports suggesting Biden could skip the summit. The reports flagged an alleged scheduling clash, noting that Vice President Harris could represent the U.S. in Biden's stead.
  • Thailand's Foreign Ministry said the Chinese leader confirmed his participation via his chief diplomat Wang Yi. Several other leaders of APEC member states have also confirmed their attendance, including New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
