Yen Weakens As E-Minis Edge Higher

USD/JPY has advanced in early trade as e-minis popped higher briefly showing at fresh record highs. The pair last changes hands +11 pips at Y105.05.

  • Over the weekend, a strong earthquake (7.1 magnitude) hit off the coast of Fukushima prefecture. There was no tsunami risk, but injured over 150 people and left several hundred thousand without electric power.
  • Japan ok'd Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine and will start inoculating front-line medical workers as soon as this week.
  • Bulls need a move through Feb 12 high of Y105.18 before targeting key resistance at Y105.77, which represents the high print of Feb 5. Bears need losses past Feb 10 low/100-DMA at Y104.41/38 before taking aim at former channel top at Y103.53.
  • Preliminary Q4 GDP report & final Dec industrial output data headline the local data docket today. Later in the week, focus turns to trade balance & core machine orders (Wednesday) as well as national CPI & flash Jibun Bank PMIs (Friday).
