Yesh Atid Offered Mandate To Try To Form Gov't By President

ISRAEL

The second-largest party in the Knesset, the centrist Yesh Atid of former finance minsiter Yair Lapid, has been given the mandate to seek to form a majority gov't by President Reuven Rivlin.

  • Lapid will have 28 days in which to try to put together a coalition of 61 seats in the 120-member Knesset.
  • Rivlin, announcing the passage of the mandate from PM Benjamin Netanyahu to Lapid stated that "it's clear that there are many difficulties on the way to forming a government...he [Lapid] may be prime minister or someone else will be prime minister and Lapid will be alternate prime minister "
  • In order to command a majority, Lapid would have to form a gov't involving all anti-Netanyahu parties as well as one of the 'kingmakers' in the form of the right-wing Yamina or Islamist Ra'am party. Given the anti-Netanyahu bloc contains the Arab rights Joint List and the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu this seems an unlikely prospect, making yet another snap election (in what would be the fifth vote in less than 3 years) a strong possibility.
