Yoon Approval Rating Improves Amid Harder Line On DPRK

SOUTH KOREA

Morning Consult's Global Approval tracker has shown a sharp reversal in the number of South Koreans who believe the country is headed in the 'right direction.'

  • On May 4, 70% of respondents believed South Korea was on the 'wrong track.' Since the swearing in of new President Yoon Suk-yeol on May 10 this figure has shrunk to 56%.
  • According to Euro News, Yoon’s conservative party is also experiencing a two-year high approval of 50.1%.
  • The significant bump in approval is likely due to a strong policy pivot on North Korea and closer coordination with key ally, the United States. This was highlighted by the recent bilateral summit between Yoon and US President Joe Biden at which the two leaders effectively ended the conciliatory position of Moon Jae-in, to be replaced by a policy of robust deterrence.
  • This week Yoon told CNN that the strategy of appeasement adopted by Moon 'has proven to be a failure.'
