SOUTH KOREA: Yoon's Questioning To Continue Into Night; Trial To Resume Tomorrow

SOUTH KOREA

The Senior Civil Servants' Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) has said that the questioning of detained President Yoon Suk-yeol will continue into the evening, but it is not yet confirmed whether this will continue overnight. Yoon is set to be moved to at the Seoul detention centre at some point overnight. The CIO has confirmed that Yoon maintains his silence and refuses to answer their questions regarding his declaration of martial law in December 2024.

  • Yoon is accused of declaring unconstitutional and illegal martial law on 3 December and mobilising the armed forces and police to instigate a riot with the goal of subverting the Constitution.
  • The president's arrest, coming in a tense but eventually peaceful manner, will bolster perceptions about the rule of law in South Korea amid the political turbulence.
  • The president's impeachment trial continues tomorrow (16 Jan) at the Constitutional Court. It remains to be seen whether Yoon will be in attendance. The opening session on 13 Jan was adjourned within minutes due to Yoon's absence, but acting chief justice Moon Hyung-bae said that if Yoon is absent from future sessions the trial will continue with his team of lawyers representing the suspended president.
  • The Court has until 16 June to finalise its decision on whether to formally impeach Yoon or restore him to power.
