US To Hold Dialogue w. Solomon Islands Following China Accord

Wires reporting that the United States will hold a 'high-level strategic conversation' with the gov't of the Solomon Islands following the latter's signing of an accord with China that many in the West view as a potential securit threat to nations such as Australia and New Zealand. Wires report US 'concerned about the regional consequences of the China-Solomon Islands accord'.

  • White House also states that it will expidite the opening of an embassy in the Solomon Islands. The nation has had little strategic focus for the US in recent years, and last year the gov't was rocked by violent protests that saw and attempted storming of parliament and the burining down of a police station. Protests initially started peacefully and came in opposition to PM Manasseh Sogavare's gov'ts decision to recognise China over Taiwan.
  • Gov'ts in Canberra and Wellington have raised concerns about the China-Solomon Islands pact, the text of which remains unknown, with the worst-case scenario seen as a Chinese military base being built on the islands, which sit to the north-east of Australia (see map below).
