Premier Jansa Set To Lose General Election

SLOVENIA

The ruling Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) is poised to lose big in this weekend's general election, according to exit polls, as the opposition Freedom Movement party garnered around 36% of the vote.

  • Contrary to expectations of a tight race, the Freedom Movement led by a comfortable margin, as the SDS won just about 23% support.
  • It seems that the newcomer liberal Freedom Movement will be able to form the next government in coalition with minor left-wing parties.
  • The Freedom Movement campaigned on green energy and the rule of law as Premier Jansa faced accusations of populism and undermining democratic standards.
  • Early data suggest that the turnout will be well above national average, possibly close to 70% according to some experts.
