Top U.S. Officials Announce Fresh Aid Package For Ukraine

UKRAINE

The United States pledged to deliver more assistance to Ukraine and restart diplomatic activity in the country, the Associated Press reports, adding that Secretary of State Blinken and Defense Secretary Austin completed their mystery-shrouded visit to Kyiv.

  • U.S. foreign affairs and defense chiefs told Ukrainian Presiden Zelensky that the U.S. was ready to provide $300mn in military financing and had approved a $165mn sale of ammunition. In addition, President Biden will tap veteran diplomat Bridget Brink to become his new ambassador to Ukraine, while evacuated U.S. diplomatic staff will begin returning to Ukraine this coming week.
  • The AP reports that "journalists who traveled with Austin and Blinken to Poland were barred from reporting on the trip until it was over, were not allowed to accompany them on their overland journey into Ukraine, and were prohibited from specifying where in southeast Poland they waited for the Cabinet members to return."
