Tass: Transnistria Security Council Reports Attack On Military Unit

SECURITY

Russia's state-run Tass reporting that the Security Council of the breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria has declared a 'terrorist attack' has been inflicted on one of its military units in the village of Parcani.

  • There is no way of confirming the veracity of these claims at present, nor a way of determining who launched the alleged attacks on the military unit in Parcani, the state security ministry in Tiraspol yesterday, or the radio towers carrying Russian broadcasts in Mayak.
  • As noted previously (see 0935BST bullet), there are notable concerns that Russia or Russian-backed officials in Transnistria will launch a 'false flag' operation in Transnistria. This could allow Russia to invade, claiming defence of Russian-speaking minorities in the region.
  • Earlier, comments from head of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushlin hit wires, stating "After reaching the borders of the Donetsk region, it is necessary to start the next stage of the operation, taking into account what is happening in Transnistria and the shelling of the regions of the Russian Federation bordering Ukraine."
  • EU and NATO defence ministers currently meeting in Germany, events in Moldova likely to be of significant concern. No official programme of supporting Moldovan gov't with NATO weaponry at present.
