Chancellor Denies Reports Austria To Pay For Gas In Roubles

Bloomberg reporting comments from Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer stating that Austria will continue to pay for gas in euros in line with EU sanctions.

  • His comments come after unverified reports from Russian media outlets stating that Nehammer confirmed that Austria and its largest hydrocarbons firm OMV have accepted Russia's terms and will pay its gas contract in roubles in order to ensure supply.
  • Nehammer is the only Western leader to have met Russian President Vladimir Putin in person during the course of the Ukraine crisis, meeting in Moscow earlier in April.
  • Earlier, Energy Minister Leonore Gewessler told ORF Radio that gas supplies to Austria remain uninterrupted.
