Two Key Race To Watch In The Virginia Primaries Tomorrow

US

Virginia will go to the polls tomorrow for the next round of primary elections ahead of November's midterms.

  • Virginia’s 2nd and 7th congressional districts are the two crucial races to watch tomorrow. Both seats are occupied by vulnerable incumbent Democrats- Elaine Luria (D-VA) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA)- and take place in districts that voted for both President Joe Biden and Governor Glenn Younkin (R-VA).
  • The 7th District race is a competitive six-way tussle which is currently too close to call. Stephen Farnsworth of UMW: “The 7th District Republican nomination is really the equivalent of a jump ball. You have individual candidates popular with individual slices of the Republican electorate or portions of the districts. So it would be a very difficult race to handicap at this point… It seems to be all three of the leading candidates have a compelling case they could make."
  • In the 2nd District national Republicans have thrown support behind state Senator and former Navy helicopter pilot Jen Kiggans. She has been endorsed by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and the Congressional Leadership Fund.
  • Fellow Navy veteran Jarome Bell has also received moderate support from the right of the party, including Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.
  • Bell claims the 2020 election was stolen and that the people responsible should be executed for treason. His nomination would make present a challenge for the GOP in November.
  • The only Democrats primary on the card tomorrow is for Virginia’s 8th District, where Victoria Virasingh is challenging veteran Rep. Donald S. Beyer (D) in his first primary challenge since 2016.
