2022 Senate Battlegrounds Evolving Rapidly

US

News from the two Senate battlegrounds with open seats today.

  • North Carolina: Former House Rep Mark Walker has decided to stay in the North Carolina Senate race. The seat is vacant following the retirement of Republican Richard Burr.
  • The decision to remain in the race sets the GOP up for a costly primary fight before midterm campaigning can begin.
  • It calls into the question the strength of Former President Donald Trump's control over the Republican party. Walker has snubbed a Trump's request to step aside and run in a new House district.
  • Trump has been under fire from within his own camp this week after he endorsed Morgan Ortagus over Trump loyalist Robby Starbuck in a Tennessee Congressional race.
  • Pennsylvania: Celebrity doctor Mehmet Oz has thrown his hat into the ring for the tossup race in Pennsylvania. The seat is open following the retirement of Republican Pat Toomey.
  • Both of these seats are on the knife edge. The retirements of Republican incumbents will favour Democrats but as this stage it is looking like Democrats will have to win both to maintain control of the Senate in 2022.
