Alice Weidel, chancellor candidate for the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) will hold a high-profile conversation with tech billionaire Elon Musk on the 'Spaces' streaming feature of his X social media platform at 1900CET (1300ET, 1800GMT). The discussion is set to last an hour and be an unstructured 'off the cuff' talk. The talk, coming ahead of the 23 Feb federal election could offer further opportunity for the AfD, currently sitting in second place nationwide, to boost its standing further.
- Musk, who has become increasingly involved in commenting on European politics in recent weeks, has endorsed the AfD having engaged in a war of words with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Whether this endorsement proves influential for the AfD is another matter though. Politico reports comments from Manfred Güllner, the head of polling outlet Forsa, "In the first survey we conducted this year, we found that this has not yet benefited the AfD. I don’t see very much potential for future change because Musk has become a negative figure.”
- Opinion polling in the run-up to the election has proved remarkably stable despite the domestic political upheaval with the collapse of the 'traffic light' coalition late last year. The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) remains on track to emerge as the largest party and lead coalition negotiations.
