Air-Travel Recovery Aided by China: IATA

IATA expects the air travel demand in the Asia-Pacific to recovery to 2019 levels next year, according to Willie Walsh, Director General of International Air Transport Association, speaking at the 2023 North Bund International Aviation Forum in Shanghai.

  • “Earlier this year, China’s decision to restart travel has provided a boost to the recovery of international travel,” Walsh said. “To be honest, the speed of recovery came as a happy surprise.”
  • Demand for air travel is forecast to double by 2040, with an average annual growth rate of 3.4%. The Asia-Pacific region is expected to comprise over half of the growth.
  • Asia -Pacific passenger demand was 74% of 2019 levels in July, according to IATA.
