Airspace Restrictions Over St. Petersburg Lifted, Russian Def Min Flags Air Defence Drill

RUSSIA

The Russian Ministry of Defence says today's sky closure over St. Petersburg was due to an air defence drill, which involved fighter jets practicing an intercepting a foreign object.

  • Independent news portal Meduza and the state-owned TASS news agency reported that the sky over Russia's second-largest city was re-opened around 11:40-11:50 Moscow time and the first flights headed for the Pulkovo airport have set off.
  • Baza, 112 and Regnum Telegram channels have earlier ran source reports suggesting that Russia scrambled fighter jets after detecting an unidentified object entering the airspace over St. Petersburg.
  • 112 reported that the object "looked like a large drone," albeit there has been no official confirmation from the Russian authorities or visual evidence of the object, while the Defence Ministry flagged the aforementioned exercises.
