AMLO-For Min's Resignation Could Be Followed By Others In Pres. Bids

Wires reporting comments from President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) saying that the resignation of Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard could be followed by others as the race to succeed the incumbent in the 2024 election race heats up. Ebrard announced his resignation effective 12 June earlier today in order to 'support the electoral process' of AMLO's leftist MORENA party, seen by observers as a precursor to an announcement of a presidential run.

  • Bloomberg: "Other likely contenders to the party’s nomination include Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and Interior Minister Adan Augusto Lopez. A May poll of Morena voters by El Financiero showed Sheinbaum ahead by one percentage point compared to Ebrard, marking a statistical tie. Among nationwide voters of different parties, the poll showed Sheinbaum leading by 8 percentage points."
