- Major weekend developments at the NEC as the ANC decided to adopt guidelines confirming members accused of corruption must step aside voluntarily. This has major implications for ANC Sec-Gen Ace magashule and the stability of the ANC.
- in recent weeks, factional divisions have been accentuated due to Ex president Zuma's refusal to be bound by the constitution and appear before the Zondo commission. This has seen the relevant factions become clearer as members aligned with or against Zuma.
- Factional divisions down these lines are among the primary reasons for Ramaphosa's slow reform agenda and as the Zuma/Magashule faction have been trying to undermine his presidency or have him removed for fear of being taken out with his anti-corruption drive.
- This morning, Zuma's refusal to face the Zondo commission may result in the issuing of an arrest warrant and even more factional issues within the ANC. This week, Magashule will also face a corruption trial (19 Feb), following the resolution that he must voluntarily step aside (within around a month). Most expect him to follow the Zuma angle and refuse.
- The next few weeks are likely to be politically critical for botha Magahsule and Ramaphosa, as removing Magahule would be a major win against his biggest adversary. However, in December Magashule threatened that if he went down he would expose other high-ranking regional officials which could see a more sizable contagion effect across the ANC. This is part of the reason for the slow implementation of the step aside rule as a number of analysts have speculated that other NEC members may be compromised.
