ANC Short of a National Majority in Latest Polling

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The ANC will find itself running level with the Multi-Party Charter in Gauteng, as support for the party could drop to 37% next year, according to a survey conducted by Brenthurst Group. Concerningly for the government, ANC could perform even more poorly in KZN, garnering just 32% of the vote – the results suggest that the party would fall short of an outright majority in a national poll.
  • ENCA confirmed Eskom’s intentions to pause load-shedding over the weekend, meaning rolling blackouts will cease until 4pm local time on Monday. The utility cites good generation fleet performance and anticipation of lower weekend demand for power. An update is set to follow on Sunday afternoon.
  • Longer-term, power generation concerns remain, with Eskom’s chief nuclear officer confirming late yesterday that there will be a further 10-day delay to the return to commercial operation of the Unit 1 at Koeberg, which is undergoing life-cycle maintenance. The unit has a capacity of 970MW, held offline for service well beyond the initial completion date of mid-June this year. The requirement for Unit 2 to delay its own respective service cycle, means a further delay to the projected time at which both units will be generating at full capacity.
  • Business Day report that Transnet have formally applied to the state for assistance with outstanding debt totalling ZAR130bln, proposing that the government take on a portion of its historical dues. This would be a parallel agreement to that struck with Eskom, although the total debt pile is just over half the size of Eskom’s ZAR245bln.
