ANO Keeps First Place In Latest Opinion Poll, Trade Unions Hold Strike

CZECHIA
  • The latest CNN Prime News/STEM opinion poll showed that former Prime Minister Andrej Babis' ANO remained in first place with 33.2%, while the nationalist SPD came second with 12.0%, outperforming Prime Minister Petr Fiala's ODS (11.6%). The STEM agency flagged that several smaller parties cannot be sure of making it past the 5% electoral threshold amid voter indecision.
  • Trade unions are holding a nationwide "warning strike", with most schools and some manufacturing companies closed as a result. The workers are demanding higher wages and protesting against the government's spending cuts and tax hikes. A STEM-MARK opinion poll showed that the strike is supported by two thirds of Czech voters. The protests is seen as another blow to the ruling coalition, which has recently pushed through its flagship fiscal consolidation package and pension reform.
  • Moody's raised the outlook on Czechia's Aa3 credit rating to stable from negative, reversing a downgrade announced in 2022 amidst the economic fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The agency pointed to the government's fiscal consolidation consolidation package and efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas imports.
