Army Chief Appears for First Time Since Wagner Mutiny

  • Russia’s top military commander was shown on state television Monday following speculation in some media that he had been dismissed after the mutiny by Wagner mercenaries aimed at ousting him. Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, who’s in charge of Russia’s war operations in Ukraine, was shown in a brief video receiving battlefield reports from officials.
  • Foreign Minister Lavrov will hold a ministerial meeting between Russia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf in Moscow today. The council’s secretary general announced earlier that the meeting would aim to bolster ties between Russia and Persian Gulf countries and encompass both international and regional cooperation issues.
  • Looking ahead this week, preliminary trade balance data for 2Q (Est: USD11b; Prior: USD14.8b) and CPI data (Est: +3.3% y/y; Prior: +2.51%) are the highlights on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
