At Least 23 Reported Deaths Following Major Subway Accident

MEXICO
  • The main news overnight was regarding an elevated section of the Mexico City metro collapsing. A support beam has been reported as giving way on an overpass about 5 meters above a road in the borough of Tlahuac.
    • So far, there have been at least 23 confirmed dead and over 70 injured from the accident.
    • The collapse could represent a major blow for Mexican Foreign Relations Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, who was Mexico City's mayor from 2006 to 2012, when Line 12 was built. Allegations about poor design and construction on the subway line emerged soon after Ebrard left office as mayor. The line had to be partly closed in 2013 so tracks could be repaired.
  • Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei expected to meet with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador at National Palace during the second day of his visit.
