AUSTRALIA: FTA Talks Pushed Back For Second Time Amid AUKUS Spat

The deterioration in the relationship between the European Union and Australia appears to remain in place, with Stephen Dziedzic at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation claiming that according to officials at the Australia Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade the FTA talks with the EU, originally due in October but pushed back to November, have now been delayed until February 2022.

  • Dziedzic tweets: "Officials say there's been no "formal" reason offered but "it would be fair to say this is against the backdrop of the submarine announcement"."
  • The announcement of the AUKUS alliance caused uproar in France (the party left EUR50bn out of pocket as its submarine deal with Australia was scuppered). This has translated into Australia facing the cold shoulder from the EU in matters relating to both security cooperation but also spilling over into trade.
