EMISSIONS: Automakers Urge EU To Soften 2025 Emissions Rules

EMISSIONS

European car lobby ACEA has offered the EU two options to ease 2025 CO2 emissions targets, a lower phase-in rate, or introduction of an average compliance mechanism for years 2025-2029, it said.

  • The group proposed a 90% phase-in of the new emissions standards in 2025 and a phase in of 95% in 2026, instead of full implementation, amid an overall market slowdown and disappointing sales of electric vehicles.
  • The current compliance mechanisms will force automakers to divert funds that can be used in investments to pay penalties, or to sell zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) below market price to support overall production volumes.
